Joker’s BS9 Bushcraft and Survival Knife, Canadiense, is based on a traditional Canadian pattern and follows Joker’s mark of traditional patterns in modern knife design. The beauty of this model (and series) is the masterful finish of both the knife and its accompanying sheath which I know will be a standout for anyone who appreciates quality edgeware.

In the words of Cuchilleria Joker "They were our grandfathers knives from different parts of the world and a traditional Spanish knife".

The Canadiense encompasses a robust full-tang blade crafted from Sandvik 14C28N (58-60HRC) 3.7mm thick steel. The ‘working’ section of the blade is 10.5cm long and 30mm wide. The walnut wood scales are contoured for a comfortable fit and include an elegant swelling and downward sweep on its’ edge side providing some protection from a hand slipping forward on to the blade so to ensure a secure grip. The handle is large enough to accommodate fairly large hands very nicely, meaning that the blade is easily controlled during use.

‘Bushcraft and Survival’ knives must be able to handle each one of the several tasks that might arise in an emergency situation (water, shelter, warmth and food) where surviving the experience is paramount. The knife must respond appropriately to the various situations that might be met in satisfying the supply of each of these.

Such tasks include whittling, notching, lapping and shaping tasks which prove simple with this well-balanced knife, shape an efficient digging stick from a suitable branch, hack through or be baton-driven into the toughest wood are easily achieved with the well weighted, relatively hefty 3.7mm thick, razor-sharp, flat ground blade based on the ‘grandfather’s knife of Canada. The flat grind allows for easy sharpening in the field as well as providing a finer cutting edge for meat preparation. The Canadiense’s semi drop-point blade combined with a deeper belly means that it can be used for skinning and the sturdiness you might seek for jointing a carcass and harvesting meat.

The Canadiense is presented with well-finished and robust, top-grain hide 3mm thick which is double sewn and reinforced with rivets where necessary. As the rivets are hollow, a thong can be passed through them to tie the sheath along a belt in a horizontal carry or fasten it to webbing straps allowing for a range of flexible ‘carries’ that would suit any situation. Two belt loops will accept a 50mm wide belt or the other for a lower carry is a loop attached by a metal ‘square’ which will accept a belt up to about 65mm wide. This latter loop closes with two strong press-studs that allow the sheath to be fastened to the belt without unfastening the belt buckle. This is most convenient when you have driven to the location where you will be hunting but did not want the inconvenience of having your knife strapped to your belt during the journey.
